Like a lot of us, it's been many years that I have been using computers, and that my computer became my most important medium to store docs, pictures, videos, music, etc.. To make it short my computer is a real and living part of my memory.That's great, but very risky, what if a hard drive fails (happens to me few months ago) or my laptop ? what if the house goes on fire, or someone steals my computer or storage hard drives ? 
Since more than 3 years, now I use an online backup service which happens to be simple to use and reliable : it's called mozy home.

To have it to work, I just installed a small client on my computer, declared which folders I want to backup, and that's it. The client will make seamless backups every-days, it will update itself if needed. I just can forget it. I do not have to worry to backup to always too small medias !

What it does is to backup my files online, it checks new files or modified files, encrypts them then uploads them. The algorithm is pretty efficient to avoid doubles, or recognize identical files after an OS reinstall. Now my files are accessible to restore from this small client or from a website. Even better, I can restore files to another computer from everywhere. I can restore just a file or a whole folder.I actually have 200G of data (pictures, videos, documents, invoice, etc ..) with this service : ten years of electronic memory.

This is not free, but costs me about 50$ per year, I think it's really worth the money. 

Of course, one could wonder about privacy, as I upload my personal data to a foreign server. Well I think of it this way :  

• - first the data are encrypted before being sent to the server. 
• - if your computer is stolen, do you have an encrypted hard drive ? , do you have a bios password and a hdd password ? I guess average people don't. So when talking privacy, all your pictures, invoices, bank statements are easily readable by dishonest people ! 
• - I trust these people from mozy, like I trust google for my mails, considering it's their work to protect my data, as I pay for this service.
